Giving Thanks For A Second Chance
Employment has been a part of Brandon McKinnon’s life ever since he was 18 years old, however, Brandon encountered legal issues that lead to employment barriers. Brandon reflects, this "caused me to lose my job and apartment." Brandon’s life was significantly altered, but his story did not end there. Brandon had heard about StepUp’s Employment Readiness Workshop through a family friend and he decided “that a program like StepUp would greatly help my chances of networking and finding a job, compared to simply sending out resumes online and hoping for the best.”
Brandon strategically joined and graduated from the workshop. He also decided to join Step2 and shortly after, Brandon got connected with a StepUp employer and was hired. Brandon expresses his gratitude for his second chance in securing employment. “I am grateful for StepUp expediting the job process because it helped me get my life back on track and catch up on my bills,” Brandon says. Brandon’s personal well being has improved, along with his financial and professional situation. “Being able to be gainfully employed has greatly improved my outlook on my situation and it has helped me begin to rebuild my life after those years of struggling.”
Brandon’s journey towards stability is just beginning. “So far I have landed two jobs through StepUp and I intend to explore housing options soon.” Through Brandon’s involvement with Step2, he has access to affordable housing and transportation with StepUp Durham partners. Step2 also has given Brandon a space to build community. Brandon reflects on Step2 and says, “StepUp has allowed me to make meaningful connections with individuals who have all been very supportive.” Employment for Brandon is hope and stability.
