Ms. Leontyne Madison - A Participant's Story
I began my journey with StepUp Durham in late January of 2020 when I attended a week long Employment Readiness Workshop. After graduating, I was paired with my former Employment Counselor Michael Oliver, who worked consistently with me toward my weekly goals and action plans.
My current Employment Counselor, Bill DeFulvio, has been very hands-on and helpful in updating my resume and helping me think of my past professional experience that I had forgotten, which even made my interviews better. I also participated in a mock interview, which allowed me to have feedback on where I needed improvement.
During the Covid-19 pandemic, even with so many people out of work and businesses shutting down, StepUp referred me for an available position at Housing for New Hope for the Administrative Coordinator - and I landed the job!
When I heard about this position I really wanted it because it was a perfect combination of my years of past administrative experience in housing and it aligns with my desire to make a difference in people's lives. My duties include data entry, tracking budgets, preparing various documents, office administration and providing support to office staff as our team works with members of the community.
Now that I'm working full time, I just started the Step2 program and it's been great so far. I'm looking forward to the budgeting classes to help me stay focused on saving money to be ready for my future. Also, I’m working on getting a car and Step2 gives access to affordable transportation and offers support as I work toward my goals.
Since working with StepUp, they have been very welcoming and helpful in assisting you. I would love to come back to volunteer with StepUp in any way I could help and encourage individuals in the program. StepUp is such a great support, and if you work hard, stay persistent, complete your action plans and don't lose hope, you'll accomplish the goals you set for yourself. It’s a fantastic program.
Thanks,
Leontyne
